The Men’s and Women’s Speed Championships have been retired, as the champions have handed them in. This author has spoken to sources within WWE about the real reason two titles have now been retired by the company.

The sources revealed that the real reason the Speed titles were being handed in and retired was that they had enough championships in NXT. They have apparently been struggling to keep every title relevant at this time with the time they have weekly on TV. So this has given them a chance to focus more on the North American title and on non-title feuds. There’s been some concern about the focus on non-title feuds backstage, and now with fewer titles, the focus can definitely be on them to develop more stories.

“The reason for the Speed titles being handed in and essentially being made defunct is simple. They had too many down there. They were struggling to keep all of them relevant with the time they had on TV. WWE Speed exclusive on X is not coming back anytime soon either, so this makes it just a better idea to retire them for now. That show was not really a huge success but it achieved what it set out to do. Now, they can retire the titles and move on once and for all. This way the North American titles mean more and all other titles get more time, as well as non-title feuds getting some air-time, which is something that quite a few people in the promotion have been worried about.”

If the company ever strikes another exclusive show deal with X, the Speed titles can be brought back, but for now, they are definitely gone.
