Outside of the effective debut and an amusing segment with the Miz and Danhausen, the rest of the show left fans with several questions. The major champion talked without anyone confronting him.
Tiffany Stratton won the Women’s United States title, but was immediately shown up by Brie Bella. Despite some exciting moments, WWE made the next four mistakes on SmackDown after WrestleMania 42.
#4. It’s 2022 again, with the Bloodline all over WWE programming
It’s fine to revisit the partnerships every now and then, but the Usos literally joined up with Roman again on the Road to WrestleMania. Fatu has been on SmackDown with Solo and the MFTs for a year plus.
Don’t writers have any ideas other than to release people and redo the same storylines? Solo Sikoa was in four segments on the night. He also predictably lost again in a high-stakes match.
Carmelo Hayes and Ilja Dragunov didn’t get any airtime, nor did the former Women’s Tag Team Champions or Jade Cargill.
#3. Why are Flair and Bliss getting a title shot and not Jax/Legend?
Paige and Brie Bella cut a brief promo about winning the WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles at WrestleMania, so it would have made sense for the former champs to be the ones to confront them on SmackDown.
Since WWE doesn’t always play things logically, it was Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss, the team that was pinned in the match, who came out.
They lost at WrestleMania, so the only reason for their involvement must have been because they are faces, and bookers wanted both teams attacked by the debuting heel faction Fatal Influence.
Other than that, it should have been the former champions in that spot. The other explanation was to get Flair on SmackDown. Fatal Influence certainly made their intentions felt verbally and physically.
#2. The WWE Champion talks but doesn’t say much
Cody Rhodes showed up on the RAW after WrestleMania to talk to CM Punk. He seemed more melancholy than Punk, even though he walked out of the weekend with his championship. The Best in the World did not.
The WWE Champion cut a promo during the middle of SmackDown, but it wasn’t anything special. He essentially said he walked up the ramp after the win and not the “loser’s lane” on the side of the ramp, to prove a point.
Instead of having a new challenger step up as they did with Fatu on RAW, Rhodes simply said his piece and left. If officials are trying to make one titleholder look great and the other one look less important, it’s working. That’s not a good strategy after the Show of Shows.
#1. Why isn’t Randy Orton on SmackDown?
Randy Orton may not have captured his elusive 15th World Championship, but he was the one standing tall after his Night 1 main event clash with Cody Rhodes. The Viper thankfully ended Pat McAfee’s pointless involvement with an RKO.
That moment, however, led to Rhodes doing what he does best – taking advantage of an opportunity, whether popular or not. Despite losing, Orton decked his former friend with the WWE Title belt and punted him.
Since he walked out of Las Vegas and wasn’t hurt, why didn’t he show up on SmackDown? It would have made perfect sense to set up the inevitable rematch at Backlash in May.
RAW got things moving in most of its title pictures. It was strange that the main challenger for the WWE Championship didn’t rear his head despite walking out like he hadn’t wrestled.
