“Things are changing around here. This place is not what it used to be. You know who feels it the most? Guys like us. Remember wrestling? Remember when wrestling was a thing? When just being great at this and giving it your all, your passion, your heart, and as long as you did it great, the fans would always be on your side, and you were guaranteed to rise cause the cream always rises. Remember when that mattered?”

Gargano and Zayn both defined two incredible eras of NXT as the top babyfaces under Triple H, who was in charge of the brand at the time. They both have become lost in the shuffle on SmackDown, and it seemed like a clear indication of the WWE Chief Content Officer admitting that wrestling alone is no longer the sole priority of the company anymore.

Sami Zayn speaks about involving the gingerbread man in his WWE rivalry

The former United States Champion recently appeared on the Huge POP podcast and explained the involvement of the gingerbread man in his feud with Trick Williams.

“I don’t think the concept of involving a Gingerbread Man on its own is ridiculous because this is pro wrestling and we do all kinds of fun things that maybe if you were on the internet and you were scrolling Twitter or whatever, and you saw a clip of guys in a ring with a Gingerbread Man, you’d be like, ‘What?’ But in the world of wrestling, there’s context and it kind of makes sense. And sometimes, these things get really over, actually,” said Sami Zayn.

Trick Williams avenged his fallen friend, the gingerbread man, at Backlash, by defeating Sami Zayn and retaining his United States Championship in convincing fashion.
