While Taker was making his name in WWE as the dark, brooding character, Sting was doing almost the same in WCW during the Monday Night Wars. Similarities in their characters led to fans clamoring for the dream match.

Sting avoided joining the sports entertainment giant for the longest time before finally showing up at Survivor Series in 2014. With WrestleMania 31 approaching, it seemed the stars had finally aligned for the dream match between him and the WWE icon.

Yet, it never came to pass. The Deadman faced Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania 31, and Sting made his debut on the grand stage against Triple H. On a recent episode of his Six Feet Under podcast, The Undertaker talked about the missed opportunity and why the match never took place.

He said despite fans wanting to see the match, Vince McMahon was not on board with it.

“I mean, obviously the people had already been clamoring for that match for a long time. And it seems like a no-brainer. Like, why on earth would you not do that? But, for whatever reason, Vince did not see it, didn’t like it, didn’t want it,” he said.

He admitted that Vince knows more about the industry than him but said the match seemed to be a can’t-miss given the circumstances.

“My goodness, Sting versus Undertaker? I mean, again, like, he obviously knows more about business than I do, but that one just seems like a home run that was just, you know, they decided to walk the guy instead of pitch to him. I don’t know what happened there,” he added.

The former WWE Champion also called it the biggest miss of WrestleMania, saying that the scenario would be discussed for years to come.

The Undertaker wrestled his final match at WrestleMania 36, defeating AJ Styles in a cinematic Boneyard match. He then announced his retirement later that year at Survivor Series.

Two years later, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by Vince McMahon. McMahon lauded The Undertaker for his accomplishments, longevity, and love for the business.

Once he got to the ring, the two shared an emotional embrace, with both men showing love and respect to each other.
