When he was at the peak of his popularity, though, McGregor went after the wrestling juggernaut and its superstars, calling wrestling “fake” and taking jabs at some of its top stars, who, of course, did not take kindly to his remarks and rebutted with their own.
In this article, we look at 4 stars McGregor had an online feud with after he sparked controversy with a statement targeting them and the company.
#4. Former WWE Star Sasha Banks
Sasha Banks, who now wrestles under the name Mercedes Moné in AEW, was one of WWE’s biggest stars in the women’s division in the 2010s. The former 6-time Women’s Champion was having none of McGregor’s remarks when he took to X to make a bold claim, saying that he would “slap the heads off” the entire WWE roster.
“I didn’t mean no disrespect to the @wwe fans. What I meant to say was that I’d slap the head off your entire roster. And twice on Sunday’s,” McGregor’s infamous tweet from 2016 read.
To this, Banks replied with “Bring it”, in an attempt to defend the WWE roster’s self-respect.
Banks has since moved to AEW and recently returned to AEW TV in June after a brief hiatus. She defeated Maya World at Forbidden Door and won the Owen Hart Cup for a second year in a row. For someone who famously held 13 titles across wrestling promotions all at once last year, the former WWE star is not one to sit down and take insults from anyone.
#3. Brock Lesnar
Brock Lesnar has proven himself in both the wrestling world and the Mixed Martial Arts world, as the Beast Incarnate is a former UFC Heavyweight Champion who successfully defended the belt for over a year, defending it twice.
McGregor had some harsh words for Lesnar in a statement that initially looked like he was favouring the WWE Icon but ended up as a major put-down.
“Fair play to Brock [Lesnar]; he got in and fought, but at the end of the day, he was juiced up to the fucking eyeballs”, his remark read.
These comments did not sit well with Lesnar, as he responded directly and bluntly by calling out McGregor in an interview around that time.
Lesnar’s response was both hilarious and brutal as he proceeded to rip McGregor apart with the opening “Man, I take shits bigger than that kid, alright?” Brock goes on to say that he weighs almost twice as much as McGregor and challenges him to come to the WWE ring and prove himself as Lesnar proved himself in the UFC.
#2. Roman Reigns
Roman Reigns is the current World Heavyweight Champion in WWE and is one of the company’s top stars and a sure-to-be future Hall of Famer. Back in 2016, when McGregor called WWE stars “p*ssies” and tweeted about how he would slap their heads around twice on Sundays, the OTC responded with a simple remark that may have hit like a truck for the former UFC Lightweight and Featherweight Champion.
His response to McGregor’s tweet read:
“You’re the size of my leg. Shut up.”
Reigns may not be a martial artist, but the OTC has a sizeable frame and a great physique big enough to take on anyone who throws snide remarks against the WWE stars and the company he represents.
#1. Sheamus
Former WWE Star Sheamus, who recently quit the company, hails from Ireland just like McGregor.
The Celtic Warrior was the target of some harsh comments from McGregor, who said on X/Twitter in 2014 that he would “whoop Sheamus’ a**” in a potential fight and also make it look easy. Understandably, the former World Champion did not take kindly to this, and the two exchanged barbs on X.
The dispute was hilariously settled when the two men decided to have whiskey and fight off everyone else, in true Irish fashion.
Conor McGregor may have managed to anger WWE stars, but he’s not the only celebrity athlete to have done so publicly. NFL star Tom Brady also made some derogatory remarks about WWE earlier this year, calling it “cute” and saying it wasn’t comparable to the physicality of the NFL, which led to WWE stars flocking in the company’s defense, spearheaded by Logan Paul, who has an athletic background but is now a WWE superstar full-time, and who was having none of it.
Do you think Conor McGregor’s comments about WWE were warranted or harsh? Let us know in the comments.
