In a press release on their website, WWE touted the success of WrestleMania 42. They revealed that it one of the highest-grossing events in the long and illustrious history of the promotion.

It was noted that this year’s event had record or near-record performances across gate, sponsorship, merchandise, WWE World, On Location VIP experiences, and digital.

“WWE, part of TKO Group Holdings (NYSE: TKO), today announced that WrestleMania 42 became one of the highest-grossing events in company history, with record or near-record performances across gate, sponsorship, merchandise, WWE World, On Location VIP experiences and digital,” a part of the press release read.

The company mentioned that the attendance across two nights of the show reached 106,072 with fans coming together from all 50 states and more than 69 countries. It also highlighted a record 32 marketing partners for the event.

The press release also revealed the digital records set by the Show of Shows, with night one being the most viewed telecast of the year on ESPN2.

“WrestleMania Saturday was the most-viewed telecast of the year on ESPN2, while WrestleMania Sunday was the most-viewed telecast of the entire weekend on ESPN. Additionally, WrestleMania 42 set a new digital record, generating more than 1.3 billion views across all social platforms – up 18 percent from the record set at WrestleMania 41.”

Night one of WrestleMania saw seven matches, with Cody Rhodes beating Randy Orton in the main event for the WWE Championship while former Divas Champion Paige also made her return to the company after four years.

On night two, Brock Lesnar lost to Oba Femi in the opening match and shockingly retired afterward. Roman Reigns battled CM Punk for the World Championship in the main event with the OTC1 walking out as Champion in an instant classic.

Booker T defended WWE over WrestleMania 42 criticism

As if the ticket sales and uninteresting build to WrestleMania 42 weren’t enough, the length of matches, especially on night one of the show, further angered the fans.

The company came under fire after several matches featuring high-profile stars lasted under 10 minutes. However, WWE legend Booker T defended this approach on his Hall of Fame podcast.

He said he didn’t like long matches when he was coming up, and sometimes the matches went too long. The Hall of Famer said that times have changed and a show isn’t only about matches, but there are advertising partners that are more involved than ever before.
