Pete Doherty briefly wore a mask under the name “The Golden Terror.” During this time, he was paired with manager Captain Lou Albano. When Vince McMahon bought WWE from his father, he put The Duke of Dorchester behind the commentary desk to work as a heel broadcaster.

Pete Doherty never won a title in his two-decade-plus career. However, he did challenge for the WWE Championship twice – once as the Golden Terror in 1978 and the second time under his real name in 1983, both times fighting Bob Backlund. Both his title matches were non-televised.

He was also part of the first-ever WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event. Towards the tail end of his career, he also participated in the King of the Ring Tournament, losing to Bret Hart in under one minute.

He called time on his in-ring career in 1993 and left wrestling for good in 1997. Earlier today, the Cauliflower Alley Club took to its official handle to share the news of “The Duke of Dorchester” Pete Doherty’s passing.

“As per his friend Danny Davis. The CAC is saddened to hear the unforgettable Pete Doherty has passed away at the age of 85, known to fans everywhere as the Duke of Dorchester. We send our sincerest condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace, Duke.”
