Meanwhile, Roman Reigns left Las Vegas on Sunday as the new World Heavyweight Champion by defeating CM Punk. After the show, Gunther and LA Knight were teased as potential challengers for The Original Tribal Chief, and many expected The Apex Predator to continue his feud with The American Nightmare.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (WON), the company canceled those plans and changed the trajectory of both stars following the event. The insider stated The Ring General was earmarked for The Original Tribal Chief and shot an interview before he was moved to the blue brand as Rhodes’ next challenger.

Meanwhile, Pat McAfee and Jelly Roll were supposed to play a bigger part coming out of the event in Las Vegas, which would have led to a tag team match at Backlash 2026. However, Randy Orton was hurting and hadn’t been seen on television, which is why the company canceled those plans for Cody Rhodes on WWE SmackDown.

Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns was WWE’s original plan for WrestleMania 42 – Reports

Last year, the management created an All-Star team to take on The Vision, Brock Lesnar, and Drew McIntyre at Survivor Series: WarGames. By the end of the gimmick match, the promotion teased unfinished business between Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns, and the two were supposed to have their third singles match at WrestleMania 42.

The company built tension between the two, but the entire card for the event was changed in January. According to WON, Triple H didn’t want the audience to be fatigued due to a third match between The Original Tribal Chief and The American Nightmare. Reigns and Rhodes have had two singles matches at The Grandest Stage of Them All, and this could’ve hurt the card.

Instead, Cody Rhodes faced Randy Orton, and Roman Reigns picked CM Punk for WrestleMania 42. It’ll be interesting to see what’s next for both world champions heading into a new landscape on WWE’s main roster following WrestleMania 42.
