Jerry Rice knows a thing or two about winning championships and the former 49ers legend has some concerns about San Francisco’s roster entering the 2025 NFL season.
Rice revealed why he’s skeptical about the 49ers’ roster construction during an exclusive interview with The Bay Area News Group’s Cam Inman at the American Century Championship. (h/t 49ers Webzone)
“I just feel like we added on too many pieces,” Rice told Inman. “The reason why I say that is these guys are young guys.”
The 49ers made 11 selections in the 2025 NFL Draft, infusing a significant amount of youth to a roster that gained a reputation in recent years for being laden with veteran players on both sides of the ball.
Rice further explained his stance, citing the timing needed for young players to adapt to the league and build chemistry with established players on the roster.
“I would have preferred to sort of leave everything like last year, add on to that, and have a chance for this coming year,” Rice told Inman. “I’m always going to go Niners no matter what. But we’re bringing in so many young players. It’s going to take a while for that team to jell. If it doesn’t happen this year, then maybe the next couple of years.”
One area where Rice is optimistic is the return of defensive coordinator Robert Saleh picking up where he left off after leading San Francisco to back-to-back top-five finishes in total defense in 2019 and 2020.
“I feel like you win championships with defense,” Rice told Inman. “Maybe that’s why they brought Robert [Saleh] back. If that defense can get rolling like it did the last couple of years when he was around, I think we have a legitimate chance.”
Rice is confident that the 49ers will be able to find success if the defense handles the heavy lifting while San Francisco’s offense develops a rhythm early in the season.
“The offense is going to take a while to catch up,” Rice told Inman. “You want the offense, toward the end, working on all cylinders. If that happens now, everything is good to go.”
