Max Homa switched from PGA Tour competition to TGL in a matter of hours on Sunday and admitted the adjustment is not seamless.

The American finished tied for 13th at the Cognizant Classic after closing with a four-under-par 68.

Later that evening, he featured for Jupiter Links as they fell 7-6 against Boston Common in overtime.

The quick turnaround highlighted the contrast between traditional tournament golf and the technology-driven TGL format. Homa says the differences are subtle but significant.

Max Homa says TGL demands more ball speed than PGA Tour golf

Homa believes the biggest adjustment from the PGA Tour to TGL comes off the tee.

“You swing harder off the tee because [TGL is] like a ball speed league, so it’s not so good for outdoor golf, but it’s necessary there,” he explained after the Cognizant Classic.

That added emphasis on speed is not always helpful when preparing for outdoor events, where control and shot shape often take priority.

“You don’t do a whole lot differently,” he added. “You just trust your numbers.

“You don’t get to play with your eyes, obviously, so you just trust your numbers and see how good you are.”

Homa noted that the ball does not curve quite as much in the simulator environment, reducing some of the visual feedback players rely on outside.

The fundamentals remain the same, but the feel of the game changes.

Max Homa explains how TGL green speeds vary with temperature

The greens in the purpose-built SoFi Center present another difference to PGA Tour events.

“Depends how cold it is,” Homa said. “It’s odd, but the fibers, I guess, shrink if it’s freezing, so last week was cold and fast. Tonight should be normal speed. Probably a little slower there.”

Even within a controlled indoor setting, conditions can shift. Cold temperatures can speed up the synthetic surfaces, altering pace and feel.

Outdoor greens, shaped by weather and grass type, bring a different kind of variability.

For Homa, the challenge lies in switching mindsets. From trusting instinct on a PGA Tour course to relying heavily on numbers in TGL, the transition demands flexibility.
