The Pittsburgh Steelers took a swing in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft when they selected Penn State quarterback Drew Allar. The former Nittany Lion is a raw talent, but should Mike McCarthy be able to work the magic we’ve seen him perform with quarterbacks in the past,
Many are high on Allar because of the tools he possesses – size, athleticism, and arm talent. The Steelers really believe in the latter most trait, as Jeremy Fowler of ESPN points out.

“With third-round quarterback Drew Allar, the Steelers are betting big on coach Mike McCarthy’s quarterback development to fix Allar’s footwork,” Fowler writes. “Pittsburgh believes Allar has similar arm talent to a young Joe Flacco.”
The Flacco comparison is a funny one for those who remember when Mike Tomlin was visibly angry about the Cleveland Browns trading Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals this past season. Flacco then put up 342 yards and three touchdowns in just his second game with the Bengals.
Even in his younger days, Flacco didn’t have the mobility of Allar, but his big arm was certainly his best asset in leading the Baltimore Ravens to a Super Bowl victory.
