The two megastars clashed in a generational match at SummerSlam 2005, but the bout was overshadowed by Shawn Michaels overselling Hogan’s moves. This led to the match being far from the spectacle fans were expecting and it became known for Michaels’ comedic selling.

Longtime WWE official Mike Chioda, who was the referee for the match, recently chimed in with his thoughts on why things went down the way they did. After a clip of the match resurfaced on X (Twitter), Chioda said Michaels was wrong for disrespecting Hulk Hogan and said he was not being professional.

“You know it was wrong for Shawn to disrespect Hulk Hogan like that even tho he was pissy about the WWE office & about he wasn’t chosen before the Rock vs Hogan match WM 18 2002 in Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦 He definitely wasn’t being professional at the time. I remember everyone,” he wrote.

Reportedly, Michaels wasn’t on board with turning heel in his feud with Hogan. It was rumored that Mr. WrestleMania wanted a lengthy program with three matches, however; The Hulkster apparently wasn’t keen on this.

These disagreements and Michaels’ frustration with the creative direction led to him flipping and flopping dramatically in the ring at SummerSlam 2005.

The Undertaker picked Shawn Michaels over Bret Hart

The match against Hulk Hogan was a small blemish on the otherwise impressive resume of Shawn Michaels. He had numerous classics against stars from different eras.

One of his biggest rivals with whom he put on some memorable matches was The Undertaker. During an appearance on What’s Your Story? With Cody Rhodes, the Phenom was asked to pick between HBK and Bret Hart as his preferred opponent.

Taker said both were great in the ring, but he had better chemistry with The Show Stopper. The Deadman, however, did say the Hitman forced him to get out of his comfort zone, something that he will always be thankful for.
