Rickie Fowler came through in a big way at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, finishing tied for sixth. That strong performance elevated him from No. 64 to No. 48 in the FedExCup standings. The jump means Fowler will advance to next week’s BMW Championship in Maryland and lock in a spot for all of next season’s signature events, a huge deal for his schedule.
This season, Fowler wasn’t automatically qualified for those high-profile tournaments and had to rely on sponsor exemptions to get in. He made seven such starts, picking up about 318 of his 665 regular-season points there, with his best finish being T-7 at the Memorial. Fowler admitted he didn’t fully capitalize on those chances and didn’t want to rely on invitations again next year. Now, he doesn’t have to.
Fowler was one of five players who played their way into the top 50 this week. That also meant five players dropped out, including Jordan Spieth, who slipped from No. 48 to No. 54.
