“No. There were just some scheduling conflicts that prevented it for SummerSlam. It will still be utilized. Especially for some major shows that WWE does that ESPN wants to push out to the world and get eyes on things,” reported Sean Ross Sapp

ESPN’s traditional cable channels carried the first hour of WWE PLEs as a television lead-in before transitioning full coverage to streaming. It began with this year’s WrestleMania 42, followed by Backlash and Night of Champions. Fans can expect the same in the next shows as ESPN remains committed to this concept.

Dave Meltzer speculates on ESPN’s SummerSlam 2026 simulcast

ESPN decided not to air the first hour of WWE SummerSlam 2026 on its linear television networks, something that Sean Ross Sapp reports is one-time and was due to scheduling conflicts. However, Dave Meltzer speculated that network executives believe offering free first hours hurts sign-ups for its paid ESPN Unlimited tier.

“The reason for not doing it, obviously, has to be that they must be unhappy with the sign-ups they’re getting or the viewership they’re getting on ESPN Unlimited, and feel that putting the two matches on ESPN was cutting into the numbers that they wanted and the numbers that are important to them, which is the money numbers… so I think that tells you a lot right there, in that if they were happy with what they were doing, they would keep doing it,” said Dave Meltzer.

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer noted that financial success depends on day-of-subscription conversions rather than traditional television viewership, despite having strong ratings for previous first-hour free programming.
