Real Madrid have officially announced that defender Raul Asencio is currently recovering from an illness ahead of the team’s La Liga game against Deportivo Alaves on Tuesday.

This comes after reports had emerged stating that the Spanish centre-back had lost as many as six kgs in weight in two days and had been hospitalised to determine the issue.

“Following tests carried out on our player Raúl Asencio by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with bacterial enterocolitis,” the club statement read.

“Asencio is currently at home receiving treatment. His progress will be monitored.”

Real Madrid’s statement confirms that Asencio has been discharged from the hospital and is recovering from the illness at home.

The defender will hope to mount a quick recovery and make himself available for selection for manager Alvaro Arbeloa again.

For, now, though, it is expected that he will miss the upcoming match against Alaves early next week.

Asencio has lost prominence in the team over the past month or so, with Arbeloa recovering Eder Militao from injury and Antonio Rudiger hitting good form.

Question marks linger over his future at Real Madrid beyond this season, with the club reportedly open to offers for him.
