However, since he arrived in the promotion last year, Penta has proven that he might finally be Mysterio’s true successor in WWE. But the current Intercontinental Champion doesn’t see things that way.
In an interview with the Battleground podcast, the luchador was asked what was different about the WWE version of his character. He said that he has more experience and feels more relaxed in the role, before pointing out that he doesn’t plan to be the next Rey Mysterio but to have his own identity.
“I think more experienced, brother. I feel more sure in everything. I feel more comfortable too because I feel WWE is the real Penta style. So, I feel glad to be there. I feel special there because, as I mentioned before years ago, I don’t want to be the next Rey Mysterio. I want to be the first Penta. What it means is Penta is very different. Penta is special because Penta has different things. I don’t want to be the Rey Mysterio copy,” he said.
He said he has his own style and is focused on himself. Last year, ahead of the Royal Rumble, the former AEW star made it clear that he wants to blaze his own trail and doesn’t want to be a copy of the Master of 619.
The two stars shared the ring last month on RAW, where Penta defeated Rey to retain his Intercontinental Championship.
Former WWE Champion left fans angry after brutal Rey Mysterio spot
Rey Mysterio’s size often leads to some unique face-offs in the ring. The former World Heavyweight Champion has tussled with men far bigger than him on multiple occasions.
One such showdown saw him briefly feud with The Great Khali on SmackDown in 2007. A post-match segment saw Khali put Mysterio in a vice grip, wrapping his giant hands around the masked wrestler’s skull.
Mysterio was seen spurting blood from his mouth, and it created a disturbing scene. Speaking on INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet, Khali talked about how the spot looked so real, and it seemed as if he had actually crushed Mysterio’s skull.
He mentioned that later he was confronted by angry fans in the parking lot, who hurled abuses at him for hurting the popular star.
