The R&A has confirmed its venue for The Open Championship in 2028, with Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club playing host.

The venue has played host to the major championship on 11 occasions, firstly in 1926.

Bobby Jones secured the title back then, with Ernie Els most recently lifting the Claret Jug at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2012.

First, however, two other venues will host the tournament; Royal Birkdale this year and St Andrews in 2027.

But Royal Lytham & St Annes will now be preparing to host The Open Championship in 2028, with golf fans of mixed opinion about the decision.

Many golf fans happy with The Open Championship venue for 2028

Reacting to the confirmation of the venue, one fan wrote on X: “Delighted to see The Open return to Royal Lytham & St Anne’s in July 2028. A famous old course that’s one of the tougher tests on the rota in my opinion. The list of Champions here is a who’s who of golfing greats.”

Others concurred, saying: “Legendary course,” and “Royal Lytham back in the mix for 2028, proper links golf is coming.”

And further excitement from other fans read: “The course actually looks really beautiful,” and “Stunning course! Great news.”

Alongside iconic figures Jones and Els, the likes of Seve Ballesteros, Gary Player and Tony Jacklin have all won The Open at Royal Lytham, which has also hosted the Ryder Cup twice.

Royal Lytham & St Annes attracts criticism as The Open venue

Such positivity, however, has not been shared by all golf fans, who seemingly would have much rather preferred a different venue.

One wrote on X: “It really is a shame that Muirfield and Turnberry are overlooked – arguably the best courses on the entire rota.”

Others agreed, saying: “Worst Open venue by a mile,” and “A bit shocking to be honest, the course is great but not sure they have the land or town to support it. We’ll see.”

And further disappointment was shared by another: “Not a fan tbh… The transport links aren’t up to the numbers nor do I particularly rate the course over the other Open venues.”

It remains to be seen how the tournament will play out at Royal Lytham & St Annes, which is located in the seaside town of Lytham St Annes in England.

R&A officials did meet with US President Donald Trump’s son Eric to discuss the possibility of Turnberry playing host, but the tournament will not return there until local transport infrastructure improves.
