During a recent episode of the phenomenally retro podcast, WWE Hall of Famer AJ Styles predicted that Gunther could possibly dethrone The American Nightmare. He felt The Ring General needed to hold the title at this point, and Cody Rhodes was better off chasing the gold. Styles claimed that irrespective of the result, the two stars would put on a stellar matchup to kick off the show.

“I agree. I think that this is a title that better suits Gunther at this time. It’s always better to chase the gold rather than hold it. And part of me thinks Gunther may be going over tonight. Right. We’ll have to see. Either way, I’m sure it’s gonna be a great match, so it’s gonna make sense regardless.”

Cody Rhodes and Gunther brawled after SmackDown

On the go-home episode of SmackDown before Clash in Italy, Cody Rhodes and the Ring General confronted each other. An irate Cody told his opponent that he was not good enough to carry the legacy of the WWE Championship. Gunther fired back, claiming that the American Nightmare was a mark for himself and promised that he would choke out the champ on Sunday.

However, as the show went off the air, things descended into chaos once again. While Rhodes was standing in the ring, his challenger ran in and tried to blindside him. Cody scouted the attack and hit Gunther with a Cross Rhodes to stand tall ahead of their huge title showdown.
