Max Dowman was the match-winner for Arsenal on Saturday, earning the Gunners a vital three points in their race for the Premier League title and winning the Player of the Match award.

It might technically have been Viktor Gyokeres turning in the team’s opening goal, but it was Dowman’s inch-perfect cross that deceived Jordan Pickford and allowed Piero Hincapie to put it on a plate for the Arsenal striker.
There was never any doubt about the person responsible for the second goal, as Dowman beat two Everton players and ran the length of the pitch before tapping into an empty net for his first Arsenal goal.

Writing on Instagram after the game, Dowman claimed it was “a night I’ll never forget”, and the comments were full of love from Arsenal players past and present, including:

“It’s incredible,” Gyokeres said of Dowman in a post-match interview with Sky Sports. “You can see how he plays, he plays so calm and without fear. You can see the goal he definitely took the right [decision], he’s an amazing player. I’m so happy for him.”

Former Manchester City man Joe Hart was similarly enthusiastic to talk up Dowman on Match of the Day, saying: “I’ve heard Declan Rice talk about him all the time, and you hear nothing but compliments. Played against Mansfield recently, really mature performance.
“When he scored that goal he believed he was going to score that goal, he believes he should be on that pitch. That’s not an arrogance, that’s a confidence. I think we’ve got a real special player on our hands.”
