Barcelona are slowly positioning themselves to host one of the biggest events in world sport.

According to a recent report from ESPN, the club and city authorities are working internally to ensure that the Spotify Camp Nou becomes the venue for the final of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The intention was made public during the Mundo Deportivo Grand Gala, where Jaume Collboni, the Barcelona mayor, officially confirmed the city’s ambition.

Submitting the candidacy

Barcelona has already submitted its candidacy to both the Royal Spanish Football Federation and FIFA, proposing Camp Nou as the stage for the tournament’s showpiece match.

Explaining the motivation behind the bid, Collboni highlighted Barcelona’s long-standing relationship with major international events and its readiness to rise to the occasion once again.

“Barcelona has always had a great ambition to host major sporting events.

“A few days ago, I told Rafael Louzan, president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, that the city would be very excited and ready to host the 2030 World Cup final.”

The mayor went on to specify the proposed venue and underlined that the final decision will rest with FIFA.

“As FIFA has said, it is a competitive venue. This will be decided by FIFA, but I have already conveyed our enthusiasm for hosting the event.”

There is a competition

With that announcement, Spotify Camp Nou, which has also been proposed as the venue for the 2029 UCL final, has officially entered the race to host the biggest single match in football.

The stadium, currently undergoing a major transformation, is expected to be one of the most modern and iconic venues in the world by the time the tournament arrives.

However, competition will be fierce. The other leading candidates are the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid and the Hassan II Stadium in Morocco.

The latter, still under construction, is projected to hold around 115,000 spectators, giving it a clear advantage in terms of capacity.

In comparison, the Santiago Bernabéu’s capacity of approximately 84,000 places it at a disadvantage relative to the other two contenders.

The 2030 World Cup will be jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, and according to regulations, FIFA is expected to announce the final host venue no later than two years before the tournament, meaning a decision should arrive by 2028.
