According to a recent report from WrestleVotes on Fightful Select, the decision to put the belt on Waller was quick after his move from RAW. The report claimed that as soon as Shawn Michaels got the clearance to bring Waller into the NXT scene, it was decided that he would become the champion. According to WrestleVotes, there were many backstage who put a lot of stock in Grayson Waller as a heel.
The report further stated that Tony D’Angelo was not being considered for a main roster call-up just yet.
Grayson Waller believed he would never win the WWE NXT Championship
When Grayson Waller tried to win the NXT title on his first run in the brand, he was unsuccessful.
Speaking in a recent interview on Busted Open, Waller noted that this was probably the reason people did not take him seriously enough on the main roster.
“I was in NXT, and I always wanted this, and I never got it. And I fought so hard, and I wrestled Bron (Breakker), and I wrestled Trick (Williams), and I wrestled Melo (Carmelo Hayes), and I wrestled Oba (Femi). I wrestled all these guys for the title. I never got it. And I think a large part of that on the main roster is why people didn’t look at me seriously,” he said.
Waller further explained how elated he was to win the NXT title on Heatwave.
“winning that on Sunday—it doesn’t matter what the crowd thought. None of that matters. That was personally the biggest moment of my career. That meant so much because there were times when I never thought that this was gonna be a possibility anymore. I thought the ship had sailed. I thought I was waiting for my papers,” he mentioned.
As of now, it remains to be seen what is next for Grayson Waller in WWE.
