After Orton managed to evade getting physical with Rhodes on last week’s SmackDown, The American Nightmare found Nick Aldis backstage this week. He asked the General Manager for a match against The Viper, and Aldis promised he would do his best to make it happen.

Following through on his promise to Rhodes on SmackDown, Nick Aldis announced that Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes will face each other at Sunday Night’s Main Event in Atlanta, Georgia, on September 6.

“And I’m pleased to announce that I have followed through on the promise I made to Cody [Rhodes] last night on SmackDown when I told him I would do everything I could to make it happen,” Aldis said.

You can check out his announcement in the tweet below:

SmackDown main event involving Cody Rhodes was cancelled

Just as Cody Rhodes was having his backstage discussion with SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis on this week’s show, Sami Zayn also appeared.

Tired of the golden boy treatment given to The American Nightmare, Zayn made his issues very clear, also reminding Rhodes that he’d pinned him to win the Undisputed WWE Title.

Rhodes then challenged The Underdog from the Underground to a match on SmackDown, and after some initial reluctance from the latter, who had an injured hand, Aldis raised the stakes to convince Zayn.

The winner of their bout would face the winner of the Undisputed WWE Title Match between CM Punk and Kevin Owens scheduled for Toronto next week.

However, much to Zayn’s chagrin, the main event bout between the two stars was ultimately called off when Randy Orton pulled off a sneak attack on The American Nightmare before the match could start.

The now bitter-enemies brawled around the arena, with Rhodes ultimately getting the better of Orton, who had to be helped backstage.

And now the student and mentor will finally face each other in a grudge match on Sunday Night’s Main event on September 6 in Atlanta, Georgia.
