One such grudge match booked comes from Friday Night SmackDown, where the blue brand’s General Manager Nick Aldis is set to make his in-ring debut in World Wrestling Entertainment against former World Heavyweight Champion Gunther. The pair has been in a tussle with each other since Night of Champions 2026, with some backstage tension following Sami Zayn winning the Undisputed WWE Championship.

The match was booked after Gunther brutally attacked Aldis after he announced that The Ring General and Zayn would team up in a tag team match against Cody Rhodes and CM Punk at Saturday Night’s Main Event XLV. The Ring General had to face the repercussions of his actions at the show in Madison Square Garden when Aldis came out and cost The Career Killer the match and his chance of a shot at the Undisputed Title, which was the stipulation if he and Sami Zayn won.

WWE hosted the SummerSlam Kickoff show at Fanatics Fest in New York, where Aldis and Gunther came face to face. The two got into a fist fight, prompting Triple H, who was also on the stage, to book a singles match between them at The Biggest Party of the Summer.

#3. Gunther has gone too far; Nick Aldis is seeking revenge

Nick Aldis has suffered a lot in his role as SmackDown’s General Manager. He has had issues with Drew McIntyre, Cody Rhodes, Randy Orton, and, now, Gunther.

The Ring General and The National Treasure, as Aldis is known, ended up having a physical altercation at Night of Champions. On the July 10 SmackDown, Gunther crossed all lines by putting the SmackDown General Manager in his signature sleeper hold multiple times.

Triple H told Gunther at the SummerSlam Kick-off show that he’d gone too far, and booked the match for the Biggest Party of the Summer. This will also allow Aldis to take his revenge on Gunther for assaulting him.

#2. He is done as WWE SmackDown General Manager

Nick Aldis arrived at World Wrestling Entertainment in 2023 and was directly positioned as the Friday night show’s General Manager. Since then, he has executed his role perfectly.

Given that he has had a great run as General Manager and he still has a few years in him as a professional wrestler, he may be done as GM, and his debut match in WWE, against former World Heavyweight Champion Gunther, could be the perfect way for him to kick off his in-ring run in the sports entertainment juggernaut.

Meanwhile, Adam Pearce could take over permanently as the General Manager for both SmackDown and RAW as Aldis moves away to reignite his wrestling career.

#1. To give Gunther a much-needed win at SummerSlam

WWE has been pushing The Ring General to be one of the biggest stars, and his retirement of legends such as Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles is proof of it.

However, the last few months have seen him become more and more agitated as things have not been going his way. He has been on the losing end of several title opportunities since entering into a rivalry with Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship.

As a result, he snapped and went after Aldis, blaming him for his losses and accusing him of being the person behind his losses. Given the downturn in his trajectory, he needed a rivalry that could do damage control, one that would boost his momentum. Entering into a feud with General Manager Nick Aldis and facing him at The Biggest Party of the Summer seems the best way for The Career Killer to make a comeback to the title picture. A win for Gunther would put him right back on track.
