Before the match could start, The Viper and Rhodes brawled over the arena, aiming to inflict pain on each other. At one point in the contest, The American Nightmare inadvertently knocked out referee Charles Robinson. When the official was down, Rhodes sent Orton face-first into the ring post.
Cody Rhodes used the steel steps at ringside to attack Randy Orton. As a result, The Legend Killer was busted open. Orton was bleeding profusely in the final stages of the match. He even begged for mercy when The American Nightmare attempted to hit him with a Punt Kick.
Orton ultimately hit Rhodes and a referee with a double low blow. He followed it up with a vicious RKO to pin The American Nightmare. Despite being exhausted, The Viper managed to cover the former Undisputed WWE Champion for the deciding pinfall.
