Before his big fight, Cody Rhodes appeared on The Ariel Helwani Show, where he was asked about his eventual retirement. Rhodes heartbreakingly admitted that he surely sees himself retired within the next decade. When asked about the next five years, he felt it was a more realistic target, and if he were to sign a new WWE contract today, it would probably be for that long.

“I think five years would be–you know– [chuckles] Umm. Five years sounds good. Like if I was to sign a new contract, maybe it would be for five years,” Rhodes said.

When the almost 41-year-old was pressed about whether he ever discusses the topic of retiring by the time he’s 45-46 with his wife, Cody Rhodes said she knew his world better than most and understood how this game was played. He felt she was too smart for him to ever broach the topic in such a manner. He also noted that she possibly knew of his goals and of his children watching him at his best.

“I think my wife is a little too smart for me to try and give her that. Uh that ‘hey once I do this I’m out,’ or ‘by X I’m out.’ I think she knows the nature of the game and knows perhaps what are some of the goals still left in me to do. And not just goals that are self-serving, as much as there’s so much I’d like my girls to see of this world and what we’ve been able to do. So I can’t fool her with a ‘hey, I know we’ll be done by X,’ but the best is, she was a ring announcer. She was a chief brand officer. She knows this world,” Cody Rhodes added.

Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes Talks About Learning Lessons From The Master

In the same interview on The Ariel Helwani Show, the host was very curious about the Undisputed WWE Champion’s enviable position, where he was the first person who got to interview John Cena after the latter’s retirement.

He was also asked if he was nervous while doing the interview. Rhodes called Cena a genuine mentor and said everything that came out of the master’s mouth was a lesson. So he just kept his ears open, hoping for one last lesson.

“I take everything he [John Cena] says as a lesson. I don’t know if it was nervous, necessarily as much as it was–I had my ears open to listening, because when they’re gone, who tells you these things right?

John Cena may have walked off into the sunset, but Cody Rhodes has to get ready for battle, and he aims to defend his gold against Sami Zayn and The Ring General this Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, at WWE Night of Champions.
