That said, in this article, we look at two reasons why Sami Zayn should become the new Undisputed WWE Champion and two reasons why he shouldn’t.

#4. Should win: It would complete one of WWE’s longest-running underdog stories

Very few WWE Superstars have remained as consistently popular as perhaps Sami Zayn over the last several years. Whether it was his critically acclaimed Bloodline storyline in 2022-23 or his recent pursuit of the world title, fans have arguably rallied behind him.

WWE has already established that becoming a world champion is Zayn’s primary goal. Earlier this year, he earned an Undisputed WWE Championship opportunity against Drew McIntyre at Royal Rumble after winning a high-stakes Fatal Four-Way match. Although he fell short, the company continued presenting him as someone chasing the biggest prize in the industry.

A title victory would serve as the culmination of a journey that has lasted more than a decade. Unlike many former champions who were heavily pushed from the beginning, Sami’s WWE career has largely been built around perseverance, resilience, and overcoming the odds.

Those qualities make him one of the most relatable babyfaces on the roster. If Triple H wants to create an emotional moment that fans will remember for years, crowning Sami Zayn as Undisputed WWE Champion would certainly accomplish that.

#3. Shouldn’t win: WWE may have bigger SummerSlam plans involving Cody Rhodes

As compelling as Sami Zayn’s story is, timing matters. Recent developments on SmackDown have teased several major directions for Cody Rhodes heading into SummerSlam. The company appears to be planting seeds for blockbuster programs involving top stars who could generate significant interest during WWE’s biggest event of the summer.

Rhodes only regained the Undisputed WWE Championship in March and remains one of the company’s top attractions. Taking the title off him right now could disrupt longer-term plans that have been developing for months.

There’s also the possibility that WWE views Sami’s role as enhancing the championship picture rather than ending Cody’s reign. His recent actions against Gunther have added intrigue to the feud. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean management intends to put the title on him immediately.

If WWE is building toward a marquee SummerSlam main event centered around Cody Rhodes, then keeping the championship on The American Nightmare at Night of Champions could be the safer business decision.

#2. Should win: A Sami Zayn title reign would create multiple fresh main-event rivalries

One of the biggest reasons WWE should consider putting the Undisputed WWE Championship on Sami Zayn is the number of compelling feuds that could emerge from his reign.

Unlike Cody Rhodes, who has already faced many of SmackDown’s top stars during his championship runs, Zayn has never been world champion. That means WWE would have a fresh slate of challengers waiting for him. Gunther could continue pursuing the title after Night of Champions. Meanwhile, stars like Randy Orton, Solo Sikoa, or even Royce Keys could eventually be positioned as threats to his reign.

Also, a championship victory would instantly change Sami’s character dynamic. For years, fans have watched him chase the top prize. Seeing him deal with the pressure of being the face of the brand would add a completely new layer to his story. WWE could explore whether he can successfully carry the championship while defending it against some of the most dangerous competitors on the roster.

From a creative standpoint, a Sami Zayn title run would provide SmackDown with several months of fresh storytelling opportunities. Instead of revisiting feuds that have already happened, WWE could build entirely new championship programs around a superstar who has never occupied the top spot before.

With the company constantly looking for ways to keep its main-event scene unpredictable, giving Sami the Undisputed WWE Championship could open the door to some of the freshest rivalries the company has to offer.

#1. Shouldn’t win: Gunther may be the more logical next champion

Perhaps one of the biggest obstacles standing in Sami Zayn’s way isn’t Cody Rhodes; it’s Gunther.

The Ring General has remained one of WWE’s most protected stars and continues to be portrayed as a dominant main-event force. His involvement in the championship storyline suggests the company still has major plans for him moving forward.

In fact, Gunther is arguably the superstar who benefits most from winning the Undisputed WWE Championship. A title reign would further cement his legacy. Thus, providing the company with a dominant heel champion capable of headlining premium live events for months.

Additionally, the recent tension between The Ring General and Sami Zayn gives WWE a ready-made rivalry regardless of who leaves Night of Champions with the championship. Zayn’s interference in Gunther’s title opportunity has created a personal issue that feels far from over.

If the company’s ultimate objective is to establish The Career Killer as the face of SmackDown’s main-event scene, then having Sami win the championship could complicate those plans.

For that reason, while Sami Zayn undoubtedly deserves a world title run, Triple H may decide that now isn’t the right time. The company’s long-term vision could require either Cody Rhodes or Gunther to remain at the center of the Undisputed WWE Championship picture for a little while longer.
