Cardona took to his X account to address a backstage interaction he had with Danhausen during the latest episode of Friday Night SmackDown. He revealed that he handed over his expensive Rolex watch to the former AEW star during the broadcast.

The former WWE Intercontinental Champion explained that he gave the luxury timepiece to Danhausen as he wanted to ensure his hometown basketball team, the New York Knicks, remained uncursed.

The strategy apparently paid off in a big way, and the New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals the very next night. Cardona was quick to credit Danhausen for the victory. He congratulated the basketball team and explicitly thanked The Very Evil, Very Nice star for keeping them “uncursed.”

However, the star quickly pivoted the conversation back to his own professional trajectory. Matt Cardona openly admitted that his latest run in WWE over the past five to six months has been highly underwhelming. He asked Danhausen to channel those same unique abilities to help another native New Yorker out of a severe slump.

“This past Friday on SmackDown, I gave Danhausen my Rolex watch to keep the Knicks uncursed, and it worked. The New York Knicks won the NBA Finals last night. Congrats Knicks and thank you very much, Danhausen.” Cardona continued: “And if you’re gonna uncurse another New Yorker, uncurse me, bro. These past five, six months I’ve come back to WWE haven’t exactly gone my way. I’m not sure if I’m cursed, but if I am, please uncurse me. And, can I get my watch back?”

WWE star Matt Cardona opens up about the difficult choice to leave Zack Ryder in the past

During an interview with Metro UK, the former WWE Intercontinental Champion opened up about why he felt it was necessary to move on from the Zack Ryder character that made him a fan favorite.

He said that the Ryder character needed to die for him to build a new persona.

“Zack Ryder, that’s the reason I was able to be Matt Cardona on the independents and thrive. Zack Ryder needed to die for Matt Cardona to live. And I’m back now, right? I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for everything I did as Zack Ryder, then everything I did on the independents as Matt Cardona. It’s all me at the end,” Cardona said.

It will be interesting to see what the Stamford-based promotion has in store for Cardona on WWE SmackDown.
