IYO SKY and Asuka had a great match, and The Empress of Tomorrow could be retiring after a tearful post-match exchange with her student. There were some good moments, but Triple H buried the next five stars at Backlash Tampa.

#5. Burying the traditional WWE PLE structure

A title match and a heated rivalry were put on the Backlash pre-show. That left three remaining matches, including a comedic tag team contest with Danhausen, for the main card.

It also featured John Cena’s “earth-shattering” announcement of the new “John Cena Classic” tournament. The winner could be someone who doesn’t actually “win” the tournament for a strange reason.

The fans will vote on the winner, like the Slammy Awards, meaning if someone technically wins, they could still lose. The entire show was less than the three hours of SmackDown, as Backlash clocked in at approximately 2:45.

WWE should be offering PLEs that are longer than free episodes of programming, and not make them short simply because a UFC event was planned on the same night.

#4. Sami Zayn and his love for pro wrestling

Michael Cole does this all the time when WWE wants fans to root against certain performers. Kevin Owens and Drew McIntyre were always called delusional for acting out when their words were being ignored.

A lot of fans, and Cole, blame Zayn for Carmelo Hayes losing the United States Championship and missing WrestleMania. They must forget that Trick Williams is the main reason he lost the title. Had he not interfered, either man could have entered the PLE as champion.

Cole said Zayn has “Victim Syndrome” during the match, claiming he thinks he is a victim but isn’t. That claim would have held steam had Williams not continually mocked and disrespected him. The Gingerbread Man is a prime example.

His frustration also stems from his love of wrestling, so by extension, Cole is burying stars and people who love pro wrestling. Zayn was left lying at the end of SmackDown after a two-on-one beatdown.

During the match, he blasted Trick with a Kendo Stick, but Williams survived. Lil Yachty then interfered as usual to blast Sami with the same weapon. Sami had to fight two people and Cole’s burial on commentary at Backlash.

#3. The Miz & #2. Kit Wilson lost to little people

Danhausen teemed with Mini Danhausen instead of a full-time star like CM Punk. The Cursemaster wrestled for about 20% of the match, leaving the heavy lifting to his mini-clone.

That means Wilson and Miz primarily faced the little guy more than their foe for the majority of the Backlash contest. If that wasn’t bad enough, a cadre of other little people attacked Wilson while the referee watched.

Miz and Wilson were supposed to lose, but doing so in the fashion at Backlash makes them look worse than if they lost to a former World Champion like Punk.

#1. WWE’s status quo with Roman Reigns

Jacob Fatu may have hung with Roman Reigns for nearly 20 minutes, but in the end, WWE did what it always does when someone in the “family” challenges Roman Reigns – they fall.

WWE had a huge opportunity to create a new megastar with Jacob Fatu. He’s already massively over with the fans and can back it up with his exciting skills.

Having The Samoan Werewolf beat The Tribal Chief would have been a huge surprise instead of the predictable nature of having the same guy who dominates the main event scene continue to do so.

Some will argue that Fatu got his heat back with the post-match attack, but who cares? Reigns walked out and had a post-match interview instead of selling the “dastardly” attack. He still lost like everyone else when it comes to the Bloodline.
