Sami Zayn was happy his friend was back healthy, but took offense to the fact that Owens’ title shot came at his expense. Gunther also feels he is entitled to as many shots at the WWE Title as he wants.
It’s put several moving parts into the championship picture since The Biggest Party of the Summer. After two weeks of back-and-forth on the mic, the two stars face off in Toronto this week.
Here are five possible finishes for the Undisputed WWE Championship match between Kevin Owens and CM Punk on SmackDown.
#5. CM Punk pins Kevin Owens clean
When it comes to Cody Rhodes, he usually only loses when someone else interferes, like with Randy Orton at SummerSlam. It was shocking when Sami Zayn pinned him clean to win the WWE Title at Night of Champions in June.
Punk has benefitted from other factors influencing his matches, and he’s also fallen victim to them, as he did against Drew McIntyre. Having something outside of the match dictate the finish usually protects whichever star loses.
Unless the feud is one-and-done, The Best in the World could pin Owens clean to retain his title. Punk won the title in July, so his reign isn’t likely to end this soon. Pinning his rival without incident is a possibility on SmackDown.
#4. Sami Zayn costs Kevin Owens
Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens will be linked together in wrestling just like Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns. They have battled on the same side and attempted to destroy each other numerous times.
The latest dynamic paints Zayn as someone who feels he keeps getting cheated by management. He’s right to a degree, as Cody Rhodes routinely received favorable treatment from WWE officials like Nick Aldis.
Zayn took umbrage at the fact that Owens gained a title advantage by pinning him at SummerSlam. With The Prizefighter returning as a face due to a long layoff from a neck injury, it changes the dynamics in their relationship.
Since he feels cheated by everyone, Sami could cost his friend the chance to win the title he captured in June.
#3. Kevin Owens wins the WWE Championship
Several top WWE stars deserve a chance to carry a major title. A few names receive many more opportunities to do so, like Reigns, Rollins, Punk, and Rhodes. Owens only had one major run when he won the Universal Championship over a decade ago.
Since then, it’s been mid-card titles and a run as tag team champion with Zayn. Punk merely showed up to challenge Zayn in his first match since WrestleMania.
Owens has jumped through numerous hoops just to get title opportunities. Winning the title at Sunday Night’s Main Event would be a moment of redemption for Owens and one a portion of fans would applaud.
#2. CM Punk turns heel to retain his title
Whether fans love him or not, CM Punk is one of the most polarizing performers in wrestling history. His ability to cut heartfelt or inflammatory promos has put him among the best talkers in history.
Since some stars are extremely popular, it’s hard to truly cast them as heels or faces. If they outright insult the fans, then fans should boo them. If they use heel tactics and berate others, like Reigns, fans should boo them.
Owens took exception to how Punk treated him in their past, and Punk didn’t seem to care what Owens said. He even insulted his appearance, which isn’t something the good guys in wrestling do.
Since WWE officials won’t turn Cody Rhodes heel, The Best in the World could do so to cheat at Sunday Night’s Main Event. There hasn’t been a heel champion atop SmackDown since John Cena last year. Before and after that, it was Cody Rhodes. The main event scene needs a drastic change.
#1. Zayn interferes to cause a no-contest
As previously mentioned, there are a few other stars who could get involved at Sunday Night’s Main Event. The most likely is Sami Zayn since he has ties to both Owens and Punk.
Owens is like a brother to him, and those brothers have fought many times over the years. Punk, however, rubbed some people the wrong way with his opportunistic appearance to win the title.
Zayn still loathes Punk and how he morphed into something he used to speak against – part-timers who take opportunities away from full-time stars.
To get revenge on both men, Sami could interrupt the WWE Title match to force himself back into the picture. He keeps getting screwed out of chances and could snap in Toronto.
