The Viper has a history with The Scottish Warrior, while Zayn is yet to win a major title in WWE. Zayn likely won at Saturday Night’s Main Event for any of the next four reasons.
#4. A good heel vs. face dynamic for the WWE Royal Rumble
The easiest surface reason why Sami Zayn won at Saturday Night’s Main Event is that it gives the Undisputed WWE title match a clear heel vs. face dynamic.
In certain parts of the world, fans cheer McIntyre and boo faces, like in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe.
In Saudi Arabia, it won’t be hard to tell who the fans are rooting for. Outside of Zayn, Orton and Priest are also faces. The story is easier to tell, however, with an underdog hero like Sami Zayn.
#3. To continue the teased feud with Drew McIntyre
McIntyre has ongoing issues with a few stars. He ended the ongoing chaos caused by Cody Rhodes and Jacob Fatu at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Rhodes cannot earn another shot at the title the traditional way. McIntrye doesn’t want to deal with the unpredictable Fatu. While dealing with those two stars, Sami Zayn has interacted with McIntrye backstage.
The champ mocks Zayn for not having a win in their rivalry. He also holds Zayn’s lack of major title wins over his head. Winning in Montreal at Saturday Night’s Main Event pushes that narrative forward.
#2. He’s huge in Saudi Arabia
Sami Zayn is arguably the most popular WWE star when it comes to fans in Saudi Arabia. He’s of Syrian descent and practices Islam like the denizens of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
He represents many fans who attend the events in Riyadh. Other stars like Orton, Roman Reigns, and older performers are also popular, but don’t share the connection Zayn does with those in the country.
Booking someone important to a venue shows that WWE bookers are at least paying attention to where their events take place.
#1. Redemption at a later point this year
Triple H has shown he’s mostly predictable when it comes to his booking decisions. He’ll throw a few surprises in every few months, but for the most part, the outcomes play out as you’d expect.
Last year, Jey Uso fell short against Gunther at literally the same event before the 2025 Royal Rumble. He won the Rumble and then toppled Gunther at WrestleMania.
If The Game was going to borrow a tactic he’s already used, it could start with Zayn facing McIntyre at the Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia. It’s too soon for The Scotsman to lose the title, so Zayn will most likely fall short.
The Road to WrestleMania can then involve Zayn trying to get another shot at McIntyre in Las Vegas. Winning the Elimination Chamber would be a way to achieve that. The title win can come at The Showcase of the Immortals.
