There are a lot of gimmicks out there that promise a better golf swing and contact. Things like funky training aids or time-consuming practice plans that (many times) do more harm than good.

While I typically avoid writing about those when I can, since it’s Halloween, I felt compelled to share a little pro-level golf tip that could actually help you achieve a proper golf swing — even if it is a little gimmicky.

Use Your Cell Phone To Feel a Proper Golf Swing

In the video above, top-ranked golf teacher Martin Chuck shares a practice tip that can lead to the proper golf swing, ensuring consistent ball contact with each swing — and it’s all thanks to your cell phone!

“So how’s your phone going to help your downswing,” Chuck asks. “Well, if you’re one of those folks that early extends and raises up to flash the clubface, this [trick] is going to help you a ton.”

Chuck then demonstrates how using your cell phone can make your golf swing better.

“Go ahead and put your phone in your front pocket, about halfway in and halfway out,” Chuck instructs. “Now [take the club back] and, on the downswing, feel like you compress with your torso, pushing the cell phone into your pocket.”

When done correctly, Chuck says you’ll feel the phone push against your midsection, triggering you to use the ground to push and rotate through the ball.

“We’re getting our body a little bit lower, so you’ll feel the phone in your pocket and kind of touching you on your stomach,” Chuck adds. “So this drill will give you the sensation of lowering so that you can push and rotate properly.”

By using your cell phone in practice, you’ll give yourself some checkpoints to help feel what a proper golf swing should be like. And even out on the course, it’s something you can use if your swing sequencing is a little out of whack and you need a quick reminder — so give Chuck’s simple trick a try!
