Reigns stated that he was the one who brought Punk back to WWE because the men responsible for making it happen had to ask him if he was okay with it. He’s always hated CM Punk, taking it back to when Punk appeared on the Art of Wrestling Podcast with Colt Cabana and kicked off six years of Reigns hatred amongst fans. ESPN took to Twitter to mark the beginning of this legendary storyline, claiming it was “ABSOLUTE CINEMA!”

“ABSOLUTE CINEMA [Fire emoji] The Best in the World vs the OTC. Two nights of #WrestleMania. All on the ESPN App with an ESPN Unlimited plan [right arrow emoji]”

It truly is the most interesting story WWE could give us at this moment. Reigns’ entire character came about, from Big Dog to Tribal Chief, because of the treatment of the fans. And it all stemmed from CM Punk’s greatest weapon: his words.

CM Punk nearly destroyed Roman Reigns’ WWE career, inadvertently, thanks to a podcast appearance

After his firing from WWE on his wedding day back in 2014, CM Punk appeared on the Art of Wrestling Podcast with his then-best friend, Colt Cabana. Over a decade later, this one episode continues to branch out and affect the landscape of professional wrestling.

As far as the words Punk said about Reigns…it actually wasn’t all too inflammatory? Punk’s issues with Reigns stemmed from the promotion’s incompetence in telling Punk to “make him look strong,” but Punk didn’t attack Reigns’ ability or integrity. He originally wanted Chris Hero in The Shield instead of Reigns, but he didn’t fight the decision. What upset Punk was officials hammering home the importance of putting Roman over in a match he was winning.

“‘You gotta make Roman look really, really strong.’ And I was like, ‘No, I was just gonna f*ckin sh*t on em and beat em. Like yeah, I get it, okay.’ While we’re putting the match together, every two minutes someone is coming up to me. ‘Hey, you gotta make him look really strong.’ I got so sick of it, finally I said, ‘You know what would make him look really strong? If they beat me.'” -CM Punk on the Art of Wrestling Podcast.

“Make him look really strong,” carried on through Roman’s entire career, leading to over half a decade of fighting an uphill battle with the crowd. At WrestleMania 42 this year, Roman gets his revenge on the man that, essentially, created him, even if Roman doesn’t want to admit it.
