HILLSDALE — Hillsdale Will Carleton Academy boys golf had their season come to a close at the Division 4, Region 21 championship at Hampshire Country Club in Dowagiac, MI.

Despite the team season coming to an end, senior Tyler Slade was able to extend his career for one more weekend of golf. His ninth-place finish individually, shooting an 82 over 18 holes, qualified him individually for the Division 4 state finals and becoming the first qualifier in school history.

The senior nearly accomplished the feat last season but came up short a couple strokes, which helped fuel his season this year that already included breaking a WCA school record.

He accomplished his goal in thrilling fashion at the regional finals. Heading into the final hole of his day, he was a couple strokes behind two athletes from Marcellus for individual qualification. Both athletes bogeyed and double bogeyed, setting up a playoff round with Slade.

Slade was first off the tee in the playoff and hit an impressive shot landing on the green, putting pressure on the other golfers. A missed shot off the tee for one athlete and a missed put from gimme distance from the other athlete set Slade up to sink a put to make states.

The senior had battled in the elements many times before, and with some rainy weather during the event, the senior used his experienced to beat the two sophomores from Marcellus. Slade finished the tournament with nine pars in the first 18 holes before the playoffs.

Slade will head to the D4 state finals, which will be held at the Katke Course on the campus of Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI. The course is a blend of links-style and tree-lined holes across a rolling West Michigan landscape. He will be joined by the Hillsdale Academy boys golf team, who qualified together for the same state finals.

The finals will start Friday, May 30 and run for two days for a total of 36 holes. Tee times begin around 9 a.m. both days. Ticket information and more about this year’s golf state finals can be found at MHSAA.com.
