There will be a top-25 battle in South Bend this weekend when the No. 15 Louisville Cardinals go on the road to face the No. 16 Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Tyler Shough and an explosive Cardinals offense will go up against a stout Fighting Irish defense in an intriguing clash of styles.
Louisville is off to a 3-0 start for the second consecutive season under coach Jeff Brohm, and the offense has been humming in the first month of the season. Louisville is averaging 502.3 yards per game, and Shough has completed 68.4% of his passes for 850 yards with eight touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Last weekend, the Cardinals started conference play with a 31-19 win over Georgia Tech. The Cardinals were outgained, 410-326, but their defense provided some offense with a scoop and score.
After Notre Dame exploded for 66 points against Purdue in Week 3, the offense came back down to Earth in a 28-3 win against Miami (OH). Quarterback Riley Leonard struggled with consistency through the air, but he had another big game on the ground with 124 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
The Irish defense remained nearly impenetrable, giving up just 229 yards of total offense while forcing two turnovers. That unit will face a much better offense this weekend, so we’ll find out more about Notre Dame on the defensive side of the ball.
