Another chapter in the rivalry between Michigan and Michigan State will be written this weekend. Both teams could used a win in the Battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy to buoy their season.
The defending national champions, Michigan has struggled to find its identity in 2024, especially on offense. The Wolverines have lost their last two games, and the most recent defeat was an especially ugly 21-7 loss against Illinois. Jack Tuttle, the team’s third starting quarterback this season, threw for 208 yards and an interception on 32 passing attempts.
The Michigan defense has still shown signs of life through the first half of the season, but it did allow the Fighting Illini to run for 187 yards, which might be a problem this weekend.
That’s because Michigan State just ran the ball down Iowa’s throat in a 32-20 win over the Hawkeyes. The Spartans totaled 212 rushing yards in that one, and quarterback Aidan Chiles finished with 307 total yards. Two Michigan State receivers, Nick Marsh and Montorie Foster Jr., eclipsed the 100-yard mark.
The Spartans will have to go on the road in this one, and they’ve struggled in their last two road contests. The suffered a 21-point loss to Oregon a couple of weeks ago, and they dropped a 23-19 clunker against Boston College in Week 4.
