Of the many events of the NFL offseason, most would agree that the NFL Draft is the king of them all. It is the time of year when teams can make the biggest wholesale changes to their roster, and in turn, their team’s future.
For example, think back to the 2021 NFL Draft. The Detroit Lions had just finished completely revamping their front office with the hires of general manager Brad Holmes and coach Dan Campbell. Naturally, the duo realized that their current cupboard was a bit bare, and spent several weeks shedding unfavorable contracts leading up to their first draft. Fittingly, their first-ever selection has become the pillar holding up everything else that has since been built—perennial All-Pro right tackle Penei Sewell.

I still remember the feeling I had when the Miami Dolphins selected wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, allowing Sewell to slip to Detroit at pick No. 7. I immediately texted my brother and friends, and began jumping around my office. Normally, I’d watch the draft with my brother, and we would order some Jets Pizza, but he had just taken a baseball job that took him away from the city, and I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to enjoy the moment with him.
With that said, that brings us to the question of the day:
What is your favorite draft day tradition or ritual?
My Answer: Since I already mentioned how we would normally order Jets and lock in, I will go with an obscure tradition of mine. Sometime in the next couple of weeks, I will bust out the movie “Draft Day” on Blu-Ray. For the most part, the movie is ridiculous and in no way a representation of what actually happens inside NFL front offices on draft day. Still, I enjoy parts of it, and it brings me back to the memory of my brother and me going to see it in theaters.
