RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — The last time there was an undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, both Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk were children. Now, 25 years later, they’re both great fighters looking to join a very exclusive club.

On November 13, 1999, in a battle of boxing legends, Lennox Lewis outpointed Evander Holyfield in Las Vegas to consolidate IBF, WBA and WBC championships
. Lewis would never defend his status as the undisputed champion, but his epic victory rubberstamped the hard-hitting Brit as the best heavyweight of his generation.

Fury (34-0-1, 24 KOs) has already held every title in the glamour division but not at the same time. In his first superfight, in 2015, the British switch-hitter outpointed the legendary Wladimir Klitschko to win IBF, WBA, WBO and Ring Magazine championships. Following a long period away from boxing, the enigmatic Fury returned to wrench the WBC crown from the previously unbeaten American Deontay Wilder in 2020.

Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs) became undisputed cruiserweight champion in 2018 and moved up to heavyweight the following year. After posting two victories, the Ukrainian southpaw was ready to face another British superstar, Anthony Joshua. Usyk displaced “AJ” as the IBF, WBA and WBO titleholder before picking up The Ring championship with another points victory in a direct rematch.

While both fighters are guaranteed enormous paydays, the money is a distant second to this legacy-defining opportunity. The Sporting News will provide undercard results and a full report on the undisputed title fight.
