Romero Future Unclear as Frank Faces Growing Spurs Questions

Tottenham Hotspur’s season has drifted into uncertain territory, and Cristian Romero has found himself at the centre of it. The club captain’s recent social media outburst has reignited debate around squad depth, dressing room unity, and long term leadership under Thomas Frank.

Romero described it as “disgraceful” that Spurs were left with only 11 available players after he was forced off through illness during the 2-2 Premier League draw with Manchester City. The post, his second pointed message of 2026, quickly gathered traction, both externally and within the squad.

Frank Addresses Captaincy Status

Despite the noise, Frank has moved to steady the situation publicly. He confirmed Romero remains Tottenham captain, even while uncertainty clouds the defender’s future.

Asked whether Romero would still be at the club next season, Frank admitted: “That’s a question I have no idea about.

“Right now he is the captain, he has a long-term contract and we signed a new contract with him.”

It was a carefully measured response, neither confrontational nor definitive. Romero only signed a new deal in August, yet Frank’s words left open the possibility that circumstances, footballing or personal, could yet change.

Social Media Fallout Grows

Romero’s message did not land in isolation. Earlier in January he had criticised communication from senior club figures, and this latest intervention appeared to continue that theme. Several teammates, including Xavi Simons, Conor Gallagher and Dominic Solanke, liked the post, prompting speculation about wider dressing room unrest.

Frank, however, was quick to dampen that narrative.

“It’s all contextual. Right now we have a few injuries. Of course injuries don’t help but it’s part of football.

“I think it’s one person speaking up. We don’t know if he speaks on behalf of all the players. That’s your perception, so we don’t know that.

“Secondly, we don’t know if that’s what he thinks. We can read into a text. I think we have a team and squad to compete but of course we have a few injuries that doesn’t help us.”

Injury Struggles Shape Season

Tottenham’s injury list has been extensive, with nine players sidelined at various points in 2026. Yet the club resisted late movement in the winter transfer window, a decision that has drawn scrutiny given Romero’s comments.

Frank defended the recruitment strategy.

“In the summer we made two good signings in Xavi Simons and Mohammed Kudus and a good loan in João Palhinha so it’s not as though we don’t want to loan players to strengthen the squad.

“It was a big signing with Conor Gallagher. I know the club is very ambitious.”

Leadership, Standards, Boundaries

Romero’s public frustration also follows comments he made last summer referencing “many obstacles that always existed and always will exist” in a tribute to former manager Ange Postecoglou.

Frank acknowledged that player dissatisfaction can exist, provided professionalism remains intact.

“I think if you are generalising, as long as everyone does their job, then it is fair enough.

“I am pretty sure there are also some players who don’t think I am the best bloke or whatever it is, but as long as they work hard and do everything they can on the pitch then I am happy.

“There is always a line you can’t cross or can’t cross too many times. I am not talking about the social posting. No matter who you are, what kind of job you do, we all know when we have stepped too far and it’s problems.”

For now, Romero remains captain, Frank remains pragmatic, and Tottenham’s season continues under a cloud shaped as much by words as results.
