The Renault Group is grabbing all the automotive headlines today with its “futuREady” agenda, signaling the arrival of 36 models by 2030. We’ve already seen the new Dacia Striker lifted wagon, but the main brand also has something to show. Meet Bridger, a refreshingly boxy crossover bound to compete in the subcompact segment.

It’s a concept for now, but a production version will follow by the end of 2027. Its shape may give off Land Rover Defender vibes, but the footprint says Suzuki Jimny. The Renault Bridger is less than four meters (157.4 inches) long, and much like the other SUVs we’ve mentioned, it has the spare wheel mounted on a swing-out door.

But while the Defender and Jimny are true go-anywhere vehicles, the Bridger is tailored to the “urban adventurer.” The marketing jargon leads us to believe it won’t have serious off-road chops, though it’ll offer generous ground clearance of 200 millimeters (nearly eight inches). Whether the concept’s rather large 18-inch wheels will make it to the production model remains to be seen, but we expect the base model to have smaller alloys.

The angular concept eschews the company’s diamond logo in favor of an oversized Renault wordmark stretching across the entire width of the grille. This ongoing trend among carmakers to abandon logos can’t end soon enough. A badge is far more recognizable than spelling out the whole name, especially as more brands are doing it, but I digress.

With the production version still more than a year away, Renault is keeping most technical specifications to itself. We do know the Bridger rides on a modular platform and will get gasoline, hybrid, and electric powertrains. Despite its diminutive footprint, it still offers 400 liters (14.1 cubic feet) of cargo capacity with the rear seats in place. The smart packaging also enables 200 millimeters (7.9 inches) of rear knee room, which Renault claims is segment-leading.

The Bridger will initially launch in India in late 2027, with availability expanding to other markets from 2028.


Motor1’s Take: Renault has been on a roll as far as design is concerned, and the Bridger is a surprising addition to the lineup. Although the off-road look likely won’t translate into true go-anywhere capability, the boxy shape is refreshing in a sea of curvaceous small crossovers.

Whether it’s coming to Europe or not remains a mystery, but it would be nice to have something other than a bulbous entry in the subcompact crossover segment. Although it’s still a concept, we can’t imagine the beefy styling changing all that much for the production version.
