AUGUSTA, Ga. – The world No. 1 would like one shot back from his second-round 2-over 74 at the 90th Masters.
After a sluggish 2-over start through five holes at Augusta National Golf Club, Scottie Scheffler had battled back to even par for the day. He was in the fairway at the par-5 13th and set up to draw a 3-iron to a back-right flag. His shot came up short of Rae’s Creek and bounced into the water. Scheffler dropped and made bogey.

“I just didn’t draw it enough,” Scheffler said. “It’s a hard shot for me because where I hit my drive there, we caught that tee ball into the wind again, so as far as I can get it out there, there’s still some trees in my way, so I kind of have to start on that bridge, but off the slope I felt like I could pretty easily draw it off. I just tried to kind of swing it with the slope and just didn’t catch it that solid and kind of hung out there.”

Added Scheffler: “Probably my only shot I would rather be able to hit again. Maybe a different decision there. That’s a tough shot, but I felt like I could make something happen to that pin.”
Scheffler said it was one of those days when he played better than his score. He rinsed another ball in the water at the par-5 15th, leading to another bogey. On this occasion, he didn’t complain about the approach shot that sailed long and rolled down a slope into the water behind the green.

“It was frustrating to get it back to even, have a couple of par-5s in front of me, and then not do many things I felt wrong and wasn’t able to convert really basically anything coming down the stretch,” Scheffler said. “I hit a really nice shot and got a wind switch.”

Scheffler signed for a 36-hole total of even-par 144 and sits T-22. He said there’s no reason to panic. He planned to go to the practice range and work on fine-tuning his swing and get some rest before a big weekend as he seeks his third Green Jackets.
“The margins are small,” Scheffler said of the course setup at Augusta National.
