Crossover coupes have quietly been on the way out. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and even Infiniti have all discontinued their versions of the controversial body style in recent months. But they may not be gone for good—BMW is preparing to bring back the X4 and X4 M.
The next-generation X4 is expected to return as a fully electric SUV under the iX4 name. It will share its platform, interior, and battery pack with the latest iX3. Now, a new report suggests that the high-performance X4 M could follow close behind, potentially arriving as early as next year.

According to a post on the Bimmerpost forum from a well-known BMW insider—first reported by BMW Blog—the new X4 M will enter production late next year alongside the X3 M. Although neither the X3 M nor the X4 M is expected to adopt the “i” suffix used by their standard counterparts, both models will reportedly be fully electric.
The performance SUVs are rumored to feature a quad-motor setup with standard xDrive all-wheel drive, delivering as much as 800 horsepower. M Performance variants of the iX3 and iX4 are also said to be in development. The iX3 M60 will be first, and is expected to debut later this year with around 600 horsepower, drawing power from the base model’s 108.7-kilowatt-hour battery pack.
Production of the iX3 is already underway, while the standard iX4 is anticipated to arrive later this year. The X3 M and X4 M, however, reportedly won’t begin production until late 2027, positioning them as 2028 model-year vehicles.

Motor1’s Take: Love them or hate them, BMW’s coupe-style SUVs clearly have an audience. The early success of the X4—and the sustained popularity of the X6—prove there’s still demand for the swoopy silhouette. BMW doesn’t seem ready to walk away from the formula just yet.
