CONCORD – Grey Gagnon had a 3-shot lead entering the final 18 holes of the New Hampshire Division II boys individual golf championship on Saturday, Oct. 18 at Beaver Meadow Golf Course.
It didn’t take long for the Portsmouth High School junior to separate himself from the 16-player field and claim his second straight individual title.
Gagnon carded 7-under-par 65 on Saturday and finished the rwo-day, 36-hole tournament with a score of 10-under-par 134, 17 strokes ahead of Souhegan’s Jacob Wilson who shot a 7-over-par 151.
Gagnon helped Portsmouth win the Division II state championship on Tuesday, Oct. 14.
“I was coming in today hoping to shoot around par and force the guys behind me to play well,” Gagnon said. “I didn’t think that I was going to go as low as I did and no one else had their best stuff which led to a pretty big gap.”
Gagnon tied for third his freshman year before winning his first title last year.
“I feel much better about my play this year than I did last year,” Gagnon said. “Breaking 70 and going bogey-free is always nice and to do both of them for two consecutive rounds was great.”
Portsmouth teammate Thijs Beelen and St. Thomas Aquinas junior Cooper Choate both shot an 8-over-par 152. After matching cards, Choate placed third and Beelen fourth. St. Thomas’ Ryan Allard was fifth at 10-over 154, while Portsmouth’s Gus Baker was sixth (155), St. Thomas’ Finn Perry was 10th (159) and Portsmouth’s Grant Haberstroh was 12th (162).
In Divison I, Dover’s Ty Buchanan placed ninth at 13-over-par 157, and Michael Gorman was 14th at 168.
