Oakmont Country Club has taken no shortage of victims at the 2025 U.S. Open, and being one of the top-ranked players in the world does not grant immunity from the perils of the “toughest test in golf.”
It’s been well-documented that Rory McIlroy had a rather frustrating week at Oakmont, and he has let that frustration boil up on several occasions.
It happened again Sunday, but in a hilariously cool way — he executed one of the smoothest club tosses we’ve ever seen. McIlroy let his wedge fly, but instead of landing on the Oakmont turf, it hit his bag and boomeranged right back to him.
Seriously, how did he do this?!
Truly impressive stuff from the World No. 2.
Now, of course, that probably isn’t what McIlroy was hoping we’d be gawking over on Sunday at the U.S. Open. He’d much rather have his performance on the golf course be the story, but 54 holes of carnage and frustration left him 10 over and well out of contention entering the final round.
This isn’t the first we’ve seen of McIlroy’s anger-driven antics on the course this week, either.
First, it was the textbook tomahawk club toss on Friday afternoon.
Then, later that day, it was a tee marker’s turn to feel his wrath.
Needless to say, McIlroy can’t wait to leave Oakmont. Don’t take our word for it. He said it himself.
Asked by the media Saturday what his goals were for the final round, he responded, “Hopefully a round in under four and a half hours and get out of here.”
And it isn’t just the golf course that’s in danger of feeling the pain from players this week, apparently, after Wyndham Clark reportedly damaged some lockers inside Oakmont’s clubhouse.
Deep breaths, guys!
