Viktor Hovland’s unique strategy for playing Riviera’s 15th is no longer an option—here’s why.

Viktor Hovland has taken a pretty unique approach to playing Riviera’s 15th hole over the years, but this time around, that strategy won’t be an option.

Instead of hitting a little cut down the 15th, the Norwegian aimed way right—I mean way right—and played his drive down the par-5 17th. In 2024, the last time Riviera hosted the Genesis Invitational, Hovland made two pars, a birdie, and a bogey on the 15th.

But that creative line is no longer available, as Riviera has added trees in Hovland’s driving window.

If Hovland was really about that action, he’d try it anyway.

In four prior starts at Riviera, Hovland has finished T-5 (2021), T-4 (‘22), T-20 (‘23), and T-19 (‘24). With a top-10 finish in Phoenix already under his belt, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him make a run over the weekend.
