The Boston Red Sox continue to deal with injuries every day, as outfielder Tyler O’Neill was removed from Friday night’s battle with the Chicago White Sox in the third inning.
O’Neill, who was recently reinstated from the team’s injured list due to a knee injury, provided an update on his status after the loss.
“I was feeling pretty good pre-game and stuff and then I tweaked it out in the outfield there,” said O’Neill (via MassLive). “It didn’t feel too good. So, the boys thought they’d take me out of there. I still don’t think the diagnosis has changed; there’s nothing structural or any worry about that. It’s just a bit of a flare-up. Hopefully, give it some time and let it calm down a bit. I’m really hoping it’s just a couple of days.
“Avoiding the IL is definitely on the table. It’s something we’re going to be shooting for. I don’t know what the next steps are going to look like, but I want to get it cleaned up as soon as possible. It’s not fun playing in pain.”
Red Sox manager Alex Cora seems to be a bit more concerned about the situation than the player.
“We’ve got to be careful with this with his injury history,” Cora said. “Playing short is hard. Let’s see where we are tonight and we’ll decide what we do tomorrow.”
O’Neill’s departure forced Rob Refsnyder into right field, where he made a fabulous catch later in the game.

We’ll likely find out more about the injury before Saturday’s game.
