Speaking on WWE’s YouTube channel as part of his farewell tour vlog, AJ Styles explained after their match that he was very good friends with CM Punk at the start of their careers more than 20 years ago. Things changed, and they were not fond of each other.
But it was all settled, and now, they are good friends again, squashing a real-life beef.
“To get in there, not only with Punk, but the heavyweight champion, I don’t think he understands how much it means to me. Because we had some rough times, him and I, and it really, really bothered me. Really bothered me. Cause we were so close at one point, and then you get caught up in your bubbles and stuff like that and miscommunication. It sucks. We are living proof that live and learn, forget, forgive, move on. Life’s too short to be angry with each other over stupid things. Me and Punk don’t think on a lot of the same things, but that doesn’t separate us from being friends and being appreciative of each other. You know it’s so stupid to live like that. I wish everybody could understand that we’re gonna have differences. We’re not gonna agree on everything, but we can agree to be civil. And we both said things in the past we wish you could take back. So with that being said, I’m so thankful for that match tonight,” Styles said.
AJ Styles and CM Punk had similar career paths. They were both in TNA Wrestling and Ring of Honor in the early 2000s. Punk signed with WWE in 2005 and went on to become a household name.
It took Styles a little bit more time to join WWE in 2016, but he also turned into one of the best ever in the 10 years he was with the company.
AJ Styles received warm and emotional goodbyes from the WWE locker room
Based on the farewell tour vlog, the WWE locker room knew that AJ Styles was going to retire at the Royal Rumble. Many of his peers were very emotional before and after the match, including some of his TNA Wrestling contemporaries like Xavier Woods (Consequences Creed), producer Chris Parks (Abyss) and referee Dan Engler (Rudy Charles).
Styles confirmed to Bayley that he’s not going from WWE, while he also shared a moment with NXT star Kelani Jordan. It seemed like he was giving Jordan advice at the Royal Rumble, a mentor role that even Triple H advocates for Styles to pursue.
