During a late crash during the Grant Park 165 at the Chicago Street Course on July 6, 2025, two-time and defending champion Joey Logano was spun out in an intentional hit by Ross Chastain, robbing Logano of a potential top-10 finish.
And now, the NASCAR garage is blowing up with reactions, including Denny Hamlin, because Chastain may have just rekindled his bad-boy reputation by wrecking a fellow champion, and it could spill into Sonoma and beyond.
It all started with 12 laps to go in the Grant Park 165. After Austin Cindric triggered a mess in Turn 1, Ross Chastain thought Joey Logano was to blame. What followed in Turn 2 was pure payback: Chastain dumped Logano’s №22 Ford Mustang, spinning him in front of Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and causing a multi-car wreck.
Logano lit up the radio immediately: “There’s f — ing six cars behind me wrecking into me, and then he destroys me from four back. That motherf — –er.”
He didn’t back down afterwards either, telling FOX’s Bob Pockrass: “He admitted he wrecked me on purpose, which means he should get fined. That’s not okay.”
Denny Hamlin Backs Logano: “Rage-Wrecked Other Cars”
Denny Hamlin sided with Joey Logano on his Actions Detrimental podcast.
“Chastain rage-wrecked other cars that didn’t have anything to do with it… I don’t like it, I don’t agree with it… I agree with everything Joey said.”
Even Denny Hamlin, who’s had beef with both Logano and Chastain in the past, was surprised by the move.
“Especially on a road course, you’ve got to know. You can’t just react and wreck somebody based on a guess.”
And then he dropped the mic: “They’re not gonna fine him. Unless it’s me. Inconsistencies are the only consistency we have.”
Denny Hamlin’s mention of his $50,000 fine in 2023 for admitting to wrecking Chastain at Phoenix only added to the double-standard argument. Logano gets wrecked, Chastain admits it, and so far… no penalty.
