Winning the last two Players Championships with $25 million purses is naturally going to work out well for Scottie Scheffler in terms of career earnings in the PGA Tour’s flagship event.
Scheffler enters the 2025 Players as the all-time leading earner in The Players at $9,046,200. He passed Sergio Garcia by becoming the first player to win back-to-back and if he finishes among the top five this season, Scheffler will crack the $10 million mark in Players money.
Scheffler also passed another two-time Players champion, Tiger Woods, who is now in third place.
Jacksonville resident Jim Furyk is in fourth place and has won more money (a little over $4 million) than anyone who has never won the tournament. Furyk had 23 starts in The Players, with five top five finishes and was the runner-up in 2014 and 2019.
A measure of the Players field is that everyone among the top 10 on the tournament money list has also won a major championship and five have won the FedEx Cup, combining for nine championships in the PGA Tour’s season-long points race.
Of course, the Players purses, along with that of every other high-level professional golf tournament, are skewed with the recent boost in overall money. Consider the two-time Players champions of other eras and their standing on the tournament money list: Davis Love III (22nd), Hal Sutton (40th), Fred Couples (44th) and Steve Elkington (46th).
And three-time winner Jack Nicklaus? He earned $170,000 in the tournaments he won in 1974, 1976 and 1978. That was pretty good money back in the day but his career earnings of $229,670 in The Players leaves him outside the top 200 in career earnings.
