The Pittsburgh Penguins announced they have assigned forward Rutger McGroarty to their AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

McGroarty is pointless in three games with Pittsburgh this season, he is averaging 11:37 of ice time per game.

This will be a good opportunity for McGroarty to gain professional experience and play in all situations.

The 14th overall selection in the 2022 draft by the Winnipeg Jets, McGroarty informed the team he did not intend to sign with them and was ultimately traded to Pittsburgh in exchange for 2023 14th overall pick Brayden Yager in August.

The 20-year-old recorded 16 goals and 52 points in 36 games with the University of Michigan last season.

McGroarty’s first chance to play AHL games is when the Penguins play a home-and-home against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Friday and Saturday.

The WBS Penguins are 1-1 after the AHL’s opening weekend and are tied for the league-lead in goals with 10, McGroarty should help add to their offensive potency.
