Brandel Chamblee has been in the spotlight recently after claiming that The Players Championship holds more weight than any of golf’s four majors.

Chamblee’s comments were made as the PGA Tour dropped a trailer for next month’s event, which closed with the line: “March is going to be major.”

That phrase has often been debated when it comes to TPC Sawgrass and where it sits among golf’s top tournaments.

For many, it is seen as an unofficial fifth major, and there have certainly been plenty of memorable moments through the years.

But Chamblee did not stop there.

Chamblee, speaking at the WM Phoenix Open, not only backed The Players to be counted among the majors but even put it above the four biggest events on the calendar.

It is a view that has not gone down well. Lee Westwood was left puzzled by the analyst’s stance, and now Phil Mickelson has also weighed in on whether The Players Championship should be considered bigger than golf’s four traditional majors.

“I’ve won it. It’s not,” he wrote on X.

Mickelson’s record at TPC Sawgrass was not particularly strong over his career. His 2007 win was one of only two top-five finishes in 28 appearances at the tournament.

He also went through a rough patch, missing six cuts in seven years between 2013 and 2019.

In 2007, he shared the lead after each of the first two rounds and started Sunday one shot behind Sean O’Hair.

The six-time major winner found himself two shots ahead heading to the penultimate hole, while O’Hair’s challenge faded after he hit two balls into the water on the famous 17th.

After his win, Mickelson was asked where it ranked among his career achievements.

He was not far from echoing Chamblee’s praise, though he did not fully match it.

‘Lefty’ stated: “I don’t know exactly today, but I think as I look back on my career after I stop playing, I think I’ll look back on this tournament victory in the same light as the majors.”
